The Challenge of Meaningful Use Compliance

The healthcare industry is currently undergoing enormous transformation. Automation of the documentation of healthcare services is one of the most significant changes being experienced as Electronic Health Record systems are implemented by hospitals and physician practices. Government regulations related to the use of EHRs are many, complex and often overwhelming. One of the most challenging of these regulations simply referred to as Meaningful Use.

Many providers in the beginning stages of EHR implementations underestimate the work effort required to achieve Meaningful Use. Hospitals and healthcare professionals are currently experiencing significant challenges as they delve into the specifics of complying with Meaningful Use. These challenges include:

  • Implementation of new software or upgrades to existing systems
  • Shared IT resources, overlapping deadlines, and competing demands of multiple high priority projects
  • Staff assigned to multiple high priority projects
  • Understanding the definitive requirements of the Meaningful Use regulations
  • Workflow changes needed to accommodate new EHR programs
  • Staff resistance to changes in clinical documentation processes
  • Interfacing new EHR programs with existing information systems within the organization.

Meaningful Use compliance is much more than purchasing and implementing an Electronic Health Record. Full compliance requires:

  • Your EHR system to be “certified” by a an ONC-Authorized Testing and Certification Body (ONC-ATCB);
  • DEMONSTRATION that your organization uses of certified EHR consistent with the intent and specifications of the criteria as defined in the Meaningful Use Final Rule;
  • Ongoing compliance beyond the initial 90-day reporting period for Stage 1 of Meaningful Use; and
  • CONTINUED compliance through Stages 2 and 3.
